Review

`Nothing could be more impressive in its scholarship than Professor Hall's new work ... One of the major achievements of this biography is the skill with which Professor Hall weaves these two careers [civil servant and novelist] into a single coherent narrative ... The triumph of this biography is that it can penetrate through the statistics to the man. Red-faced, blustering, awkward and kindly, Professor Hall's Trollope emerges from a wealth of contemporary reviews and a sensitive use of the novels with a massive and convincing solidity.' David Crane, Sunday Telegraph

`Professor Hall's narrative is remarkable well suited to his subject's style and personality, "never forcing itself on the attention of the reader" (a contemporary critic's praise for Trollope's own writing) and full of the sort of well chosen detail that not only complements Trollopian "literariness" but fleshes out the in some ways oddly abstract nature of his daily invention. ... Hall's biography is more satisfying than either [Mullen and Super's biographies of Trollope] in its method and scholarship but still more in its quiet good nature and low authorial profile. Trollope would have liked it.' John Bayley, Times Literary Supplement

`The knowledge and industry he brings to his task are impressive, and the book is full of interest, particularly about Trollope's earlier years. ... an invaluable volume of reference ...' William St Clair, Financial Times

`makes fascinating links between the fiction and real life.' Hugh David, The Times

`well-documented and researched ... Professor Hall does well by Trollope. He gives us the writer and the man' Robert Nye, The Scotsman

`N. John Hall's thorough and painstaking work may well be the definitive biography.' John Rowe Townsend, The Tablet

`excellent new biography ... N. John Hall has accomplished a superlative portait of Trollope' Jonathan Keates, Observer

`thorough and well-written' Alan Bell, Literary Review

`Hall's is the fourth [Trollope] biography to be published in recent years and it will take an honoured place on my Trollope shelf' Paul Foot, Evening Standard

`This is a thorough and detailed book;' Christina Koning, The Guardian
