Review:
Proverbs are addictive. Providing the wisdom of the world as well as insight into the world, Mieder's collection of international proverbs is the sort of book you want to keep near at hand, to skim through in a pensive moment, to search for a good quote, to leave around in hopes that the kids imbibe some worthwhile sagacity, and to pass around a group of like-minded language and reference enthusiasts for the fun of reading aloud. From just one page you can find erudition from the French ("It would be a very big book that contained all the maybes uttered in a day") and the Vietnamese ("What is true of the buffalo's bowels is true of the cow's bowels") as well as a Yiddish sample ("You can't have more in the bowl than you have in the pot") and an African truth ("Send a boy where he wants to go and you'll see his best pace"). As interesting for the culturally specific metaphors as for the shared world experiences, these 2,000 proverbs are handsomely and durably bound for posterity. --Stephanie Gold
