Bundled with accessory programs and packed with supplementary modules, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 might be more properly called the Internet Explorer 5 Suite. If this product is your tool for getting on the Internet for the first time, you need to read Quick Course in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 to get yourself up to speed.
What's neat about this book is that it doesn't focus exclusively on the software named in its title. Rather, the authors recognize that if you don't know how to use IE5, you probably don't know a lot about the Internet, either. They go to considerable lengths to explain Web addresses, electronic mail addresses, and Internet newsgroups--all things you'll have to comprehend before you can use the Internet tools in the IE5 suite.
Once they've laid the groundwork, the authors show you how to surf with IE5. They not only show you how to call up Web pages and add items to your Favorites list; they also show you how to find information using AltaVista, Yahoo, and the various Microsoft Network (MSN) resources. Once you know how to use the Web, you will find out how to use Outlook Express to send electronic messages and manage your contact lists. The book also includes good coverage of NetMeeting and IE5's multimedia capabilities. --David Wall
