PreSchool-Grade 2-A little star in the sky, sitting on a silver moonbeam, wonders about the dark and blue places down below. The moon explains that people live on the dark places and that the patches of blue are water. The little star is fascinated by the sea, so the moon sends him off to learn about it, and he begins a new life as a "sea star." Each day he goes down into the deep waters discovering all kinds of different fish, coral, and other marine life. Soon, however, he has learned all he can and longs to see more of the world's "distant shores, far-off oceans, and unimaginable creatures." The journey takes him all over the planet, until at last he hears the song of the nightingale, and knows that it is time to return home to the sky. One thing he leaves behind, though, is the crusty shell of a starfish. This Swiss import attempts to be part pourquoi story, part original myth or legend. Unfortunately, it fails to capture the imagination. The illustrations are done in a Picassoesque style, using watercolor and ink in a full-page format. Primarily done in bright blues, reds, and oranges, they are painted on textured stock, and are easy on the eye. Acceptable as a supplemental purchase only.
