Reviews

PreSchool-Grade 1-This short tale of self-confidence just misses the mark. A young penguin enjoys soaring above his frozen Antarctic home until a grumpy seagull informs him that penguins can't fly. He is unhappy about losing his ability to be airborne as a result of the comment, but a friendly seal reminds him of his many other skills, including sliding down slopes, swimming fast, ice-skating, and waddling. After bolstering Filbert's ego, the seal says, "Just remember- you can do anything you want to, if you just set your mind to it," and flies into the sunset. That's where the logic falters. Perhaps if the seal had asked, "Who says you can't fly?" instead of "Who cares if you can't fly?" the pep talk at the book's conclusion would make more sense. As it is, the seal seems to be confirming what the seagull told Filbert, even though the seal witnessed him in flight. Engaging artwork reminiscent of Hans de Beer's Little Polar Bear (North-South, 1987), and dominated by blues, greens, and white, is the highlight of this pointless story.
