About the Author:

Alessandra Roberti was born in Italy. She studied at the Art Institute of Urbino and the Art Academy of Florence. Her work has appeared in numerous exhibitions throughout Italy.

Kindergarten-Grade 4–Incorporating many folktale elements, this original story pits a wolf against a gentle-spirited young man sent out into the world to seek his fortune. Abel's parents fill his pack with a few essentials and he sets off, eventually entering a forest where he finds a good spot to build his house and plant his garden. The wolf resents his intrusion and plots to kill him, but the plan backfires, leaving the animal badly injured and completely at his rival's mercy. Abel surprises the creature by bandaging him up and nursing him to health, and in the end, the two become friends. Roberti's softly focused illustrations have the shimmering look of pointillism and complement the gentleness of the story, which ends on an upbeat note with a crystal-clear resolution.
