Mona the Monster Girl lives with her mother in a lovely dark, dusty attic. Like many young monsters, Mona is afraid to go to sleep in the light, convinced that scary human children are lurking under her bed or hiding in her closet. "There are no such things as children," her mother tells her. "They're just make-believe." But Mona is not convinced. Then one bright, sunny morning, Mona's worst daymare is realized. Youngsters will be reassured and entertained by this comical switch on the familiar "monster in the cupboard" story.

Moritz Petz was born in Munich, Germany. Upon completion of his studies, he traveled through Italy, Denmark, and Sweden, working at various jobs along the way. his interests include street and puppet theater, chess, music, and writing. He now lives in southern Germany.
Kindergarten-Grade 2 - A fanged, raven-haired monster child fears the human children who live in her "cellar." Lenny and Maria investigate their attic and discover chubby Mona. After an awkward moment involving a water gun, the three take pleasure in sharing their worlds with one another, especially since the respective parents can only see their own offspring. The premise of considering others' viewpoints has moments of success as when Mona delights in cleaning Maria's room since she's not allowed to organize her own. But the dialogue is stilted and some sections rely heavily on passive verbs. Dusíková's softly colored illustrations bring value to the book with compelling details of the attic. Socks with built-in claws, a horned alarm clock, and bat bedposts will entice young monster fans. The closing page shows self-portraits by the humans on a kite caught in a tree, right where Mona will see it through the skylight when she wakes - at night, of course. - Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA
