When the animals, who gather every night to share fairy tales, myths, and legends, refuse to believe Hedgehog's claims that he has seen a unicorn, they all lose their storytelling abilities as a strange quietness falls over the forest.

"Udo Weigelt was born in Hamburg, Germany. He studied business and graphic design and worked as a layout artist and later as a mechanic. He went on to study German and History. He has written many books for North-South including Bear's Last Journey, The Sandman and Santa's Lucky Charm."
Kindergarten-Grade 3 - Every evening, animals gather in the woods to share stories. On the way there, Hedgehog sees a unicorn drinking from a stream and rushes to tell the others. Hare says that unicorns are only legends, and pompous Bear maintains that it was just an illusion. Even when they view the unicorn with their own eyes, they still refuse to believe that it exists. The next evening, the animals are unable to remember a single story, and the forest seems dull and cheerless. They postulate that their doubts about the unicorn caused this change and search everywhere for it, unsuccessfully. Deciding to lure it out by proving that they believe in magical things, they create a new story, to which they all contribute. Afterward, Hare and Hedgehog see the unicorn again, and it looks to be at peace. The abrupt ending is followed by a brief note about this mystical beast. Gukova's watercolor-and-pastel paintings show softly rendered creatures in luminous settings. There is a delightful rendition of the unicorn, camouflaged or appearing as the animals imagine it - as part of the tree branches that arch above the story-telling circle and protect it. Unfortunately, the artwork can't overcome the tale's lack of appeal or unity. - Susan Hepler, Burgundy Farm Country Day School, Alexandria, VA
