Synopsis
Spring has finally arrived, and Freddy the cat can't wait to go out on the prowl. But something very strange is happening. Freddy easily catches Mole, who is outside in daylight and doesn't even try to scramble into his tunnel. All Mole seems to care about is a pretty girl mole. Freddy is so surprised, he sets Mole free. Sparrow proves just as easy to catch doesn't even try to fly away. He's too busy mooning over beautiful Antonia sparrow. No one is afraid of Freddy anymore. What is going on? Hedgehog has the answer love is in the air. It's highly contagious, and before he knows what hit him, Freddy, too, is in love.

About the Author
Udo Weigelt was born in Hamburg, Germany. He has written many books for North-South Books, including Sleepy Bear's Christmas, The Wild Wombat, and Bear's Last Journey. Sarah Emmanuelle Burg was born in Alsace, France, where she still lives. She studied art at Le Quai, École Supérieure d'Art in Mulhouse, France. Her work has been presented in various exhibitions in France, and she shares her stories and illustrations with children, lecturing at local schools. This is her first season with North-South.

PreSchool-K–After being cooped up all winter, Freddy, a scruffy-looking tabby, is enjoying the outdoors on a beautiful spring day. Hes unpleasantly surprised when neither a mole nor a sparrow is frightened by his attempts to intimidate them. Indeed, the animals and birds all are acting strangely. A helpful hedgehog explains that they are so in love that their thinking is off and they arent worried about danger. Freddy decides that maybe he should try it and runs off to find Mew, a female cat with whom he has an acquaintance. They rub up against one another, tails curved into a heart-shape and the story ends on a happily-ever-after note. The art is the highlight of the book. Soft pencil-and-watercolor illustrations reveal spring yellows and greens and adorable creatures bitten by the love bug. However, a story about falling in love seems a bit premature for the preschool set, and this title may be beyond their sensibilities.–Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI
