Synopsis

Everyone thinks that Toad is very important. Hes found a pair of glasses, and now he can read. If Toad can read with his glasses, then surely Duck can write with the pen he found! Proudly, he scribbles a story on some paper and presents it to Toad. Everyone waits while Toad clears his throat, hesitates, and complains that his eyes are tired from reading all day anything to keep from admitting that he cant really read after all . . .

About the Author

Harmen van Straaten always loved to draw, but as a young adult, felt pressured into pursuing a career in law. After working briefly as a lawyer (and not enjoying it), he started to write childrens books, and has since written and illustrated over 200 books which have been published in Holland, Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, and now the United States as well. Ducks Tale is his first book for North-South Books Inc. Harmen van Straaten lives in Holland.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2–This book teaches the values of self-expression, determination, and friendship. Toad has glasses and apparently knows how to read, so when Duck finds a pen, he assumes that he will be able to write. The bird is determined to produce a story and works all day to get his ideas on paper. When he hands his composition to Toad after dinner to read to their friends, the amphibian tries to beg off. Then he looks at what Duck has scribbled and makes up a tale about Duck, reading it aloud. Otter and Hedgehog are thoroughly impressed with Toad's reading and Duck's writing. The warm, softly colored illustrations suit the calm atmosphere of the story. Children will be drawn to these appealing creatures, true friends who don't expose each other's foibles.–Kristen M. Todd, Middle Country Public Library, Centereach, NY
