Synopsis

An engineering feat—sure to please tourists, commuters, and little listeners alike! How do you build a tunnel through a mountain? It's not so easy—"The devil himself helped the people to build the first bridge!" But that's just what some industrious engineers are going to do much to the pleasure of one small impatient vacationer. Gotthard Pass in Switzerland— the most important connection between southern and northern Europe—is about to get another tunnel. From impatient vacationers, the Saint who the pass was named for, and the first precarious car journey over the mountain to how modern tunnel engineering works and modern trains this book covers the history and the trials and tribulations to enable all things that go.

Reviews

Gr 1–4—This lively title describes the multiple bridges, roads, and tunnels that have transported travelers for centuries over and under the strategic Gotthard Pass in Switzerland. A traffic jam prompts a father to explain to his family the long, difficult journey to cross the Gotthard of yesteryear. Through colored pencil drawings, each spread depicts a transportation challenge that was met with engineering ingenuity—beginning with the Schollenen Gorge with its "Devil's Bridge" and moving on to cover the transport of goods, winter snows, automobile and railway requirements, and the construction of the new base tunnel. The illustrations are accompanied by short summaries and factual and cultural asides. Godi, a mountain goat who lives in the Gotthard Pass, appears frequently, offering wisdom and wisecracks. This translation includes place names, cultural references, and several confusing time and distance comparisons that will require further explanation for U.S. readers. This book is a timely addition to the market, as the high-tech Gotthard Pass Base Railway Tunnel opened on June 1, 2016—a world record 35 miles in length. VERDICT Though it contains some unfamiliar geographic references, this eye-catching presentation of an engineering marvel is current. Consider for collections that serve future engineers and architects.—Gerry Larson, formerly at Durham School of the Arts, NC
