PreS-Gr. 2. The small-format books in the Helpers in Our Community series feature full-page, color photos facing pages of large-print text. Each of the nine sentences (one per double-page spread) in Child Care begins with the words "child care workers" and eight of the nine also include the word children. This leads to a certain monotony in the writing. On the other hand, the pictures show children from infancy to perhaps kindergarten level, making this a better choice for day-care and preschool centers than the many books that focus on teachers of older children. Written with more varied sentence structure, Construction Workers shows men (and one woman) at work building homes, businesses, and roads. The identical picture of a woman doing carpentry also appears in the Labor Day by Mari C. Schuh, on p.126, Capstone's National Holidays series. With strong multicultural representation and short, simple texts, books in this series will help fill a need for preschool and primary-grade units on community helpers. Carolyn Phelan
