Grade 2-3–These books provide very basic information on each country's geography, history, government, economy, culture, and lifestyle. The attractive presentation features full-color photographs and occasional brief fact boxes. The material, however, is often oversimplified and, occasionally, erroneous. Pakistan, the better of the two, has two, not three, territories and four provinces. The former colonial power here is called the United Kingdom, and in India, Great Britain–a possible source of confusion for young readers. Pie charts show ethnic breakdowns but lack any descriptions of the peoples. The map of India continues to use the city names Bombay and Calcutta, with no indication that they have been officially changed to Mumbai and Kolkata. While the text states that according to Indian law, children must finish middle school, nowhere does it point out that only half of them continue beyond grade school. No mention is made of India's booming film industry, the largest in the world. Wait for something better to come along.– Diane S. Marton, Arlington County Library, VA
