This slim, polished entry in the Fact Finders Biographies: Great Hispanics series lightly addresses the background of "the first Hispanic female astronaut in space," referencing Ochoa's identity as a third-generation Mexican American only twice. Even so, her high-profile achievements should impress even those readers who were initially drawn by the series' Hispanic pride theme. After having her first application rejected and spending several years as a researcher and inventor, Ochoa entered NASA's training program in 1990, a time when "almost all astronauts were men," going on to complete four missions before becoming deputy director of Flight Crew Operations. Sources for sidebar quotations and a less abrupt ending, perhaps one acknowledging recent space-program upheavals, would have made this even better. Still, aspiring astronauts and report writers will appreciate the spacious, striking design; the excellent selection of personal and NASA photos; and the concluding time line and titles for further reading.
