Gr. 6-12. With the end of the Cold War, many citizens throughout the world breathed a sigh of relief. But, according to several of the essays in this At Issues series volume, the threat of nuclear holocaust has only intensified as nuclear capability has spread. Essays here express concern that rogue nations such as Iran and Iraq are now also acquiring the capability to develop nuclear arms. Differing opinions are expressed quite effectively, covering everything from the 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to the 1996 Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Opening essays provide general arguments about nuclear concerns; others argue about the potential threat of individual nations, including India, Pakistan, and China. Throughout, teen readers will find much valid data for reports and speeches and enough strong arguments espousing different views to develop their own opinions on the subject. Roger Leslie
