Grade 8 Up-The state of race relations in America, whether racism is a serious problem, how policymakers respond to minorities' concerns, and how race relations can be improved are the four issues addressed in this title. That people disagree on these volatile issues, or at least view them from different points of view, is obvious throughout the text. The opinions are culled from a variety of sources and have undergone some editing to accommodate a young adult readership, according to the editors. Provocative essays cover such topics as whether colleges should have race-sensitive admissions policies and whether schools should have bilingual education. Viewpoints encompass a wide spectrum of minority concerns. Discussion questions help readers focus on the viewpoints and attempt to determine which argument is more persuasive. Each section ends with a periodical bibliography.

Gr. 9-12. Your library may already have a similarly titled book in the Opposing Viewpoints series (1995), but this is an entirely new collection of articles. The voices are immediate and contemporary, all from the last few years, and so are the book and periodical bibliographies. The crucial issues are from today's headlines. Are blacks losing jobs to immigrants? Does bilingual education work? Is affirmative action fair? There's a wide range of opinion, both heated and calm; the arguments are about racial profiling, diversity training, or how white racism harms blacks. In Issues in Racism [BKL S 1 00] in the Contemporary Issues series, Mary Williams discusses many of the same controversies, but here she's the editor, and the articles and excerpts are reproduced at length, with just a brief introduction to each section. As in the Issues book, the focus is on African American/white/Latino relations.
