From Booklist:
Gr. 9-12. Designed to supplement classroom texts, this thorough, multilayered analysis invites instructors and students to explore the past in order to understand what led to and resulted from many major events in American history. This volume, the first in the Perspectives on History series, covers the period from colonialism to the Civil War and includes topics such as the relations between Native Americans and early explorers, the creation of the Constitution, slavery in antebellum America, and the roles of women during the Civil War. Each chapter begins with secondary readings from historians who analyze, interpret, and draw conclusions from the past. Then individual perspectives (including letters, diaries, newspapers, and other primary sources) shed a more personal light on what occurred. Each selection begins with a brief explanatory introduction and concludes with a few questions for discussion. Although there are no illustrations, except for occasional maps and charts, the large print and two-column page layout make this solid work manageable for YA readers. Roger Leslie

Review:
"The anthology focuses on key problems in American history and does not include the usual collection of primary source documents found in many other collections. Instead, each unit attempts to cover a wide variety of topics and focuses on political, social, cultural, and intellectual history... Each unit and selection begins with a brief introduction and concludes with questions that provoke students to think about the essay or document, to consider the reading in the context of the chapter, or to place the reading in the context of what they may have read in a textbook... Most of the selections included cannot be found in other anthologies; so, this collection is a valuable supplement to other history resources. Moreover, it tries to take the students beyond the facts to get them to understand the past and to consider how historians go about their business. Recommended."
