Reviews

Gr. 6-12. This wide-ranging entry in the Current Controversies series gives readers information for reports as well as for making personal choices. Essays go beyond the expected "it's a bigger problem than we think" and "the problem is exaggerated" to explore connections between underage drinking and alcoholism, driving fatalities, irresponsible sexual behavior, and brain damage. Considerable space is dedicated to views on alcohol advertisements in various media, and there are lively debates about age limits for drinking. The last section includes six essays that suggest ways to combat teen alcohol abuse on college campuses, through zero-tolerance laws, and more. The writing is more intellectual than impassioned, and supporting evidence usually comes from respected sources that young readers will likely recognize and trust. Rich material for many curricular disciplines. Roger Leslie
