Reviews

Gr. 8-12. This collection of 25 essays in the Opposing Viewpoints series provides much to consider about the psychological motivation of abusers and the trauma to victims. Nearly every author presents men as perpetrators, and, not coincidentally, there is strong debate between women who decry excessive male violence and men who claim that the data and reporting are exaggerated. Topics covered include rape, heterosexual pornography, pedophilia (especially by adults whose jobs include daily interaction with children), castration, battered woman syndrome, and rape-shield laws. Several writers play fast and loose with their statistics, which readers may discern when they look at the arguments back-to-back. Except for one brief, compelling example of domestic violence in a lesbian relationship, same-sex situations are not addressed; and, perhaps because it has been covered ad nauseam in recent years, abuse by priests is only glossed over here. But, overall, this book provides a varied, often enlightening, discussion of an often hidden problem. Roger Leslie
