Book by Nardo, Don

Grade 6 Up-- In a fluid, easy-to-follow writing style, Nardo gives information about the reasons people eat, causes and treatment of eating disorders, and advice on developing a sensible approach to diet. While straightforward enough for junior high readers, the approach and illustrations are objective and mature enought to make this a good choice for anyone seeking a basic understanding of eating disorders. The personal experiences of various individuals punctuate and illustrate topics under discussion. Black-and-white photographs, some with poor contrast, break up the text; a few line drawings of questionable usefulness and attractiveness are also interspersed. An appendix lists behaviors associated with eating disorders; it is followed by a list of further reading. Similar in scope to Epstein's Eating Habits and Disorders (Chelsea, 1990) and Claypool's Food Trips and Traps (Watt, 1983), this is a suitable additional choice for general information. --Lois McCulley, Wichita Falls High School, TX
