Reviews

Grade 5-7 - This slim series entry in an easy-to-read format covers Italy's golden rebirth in the Middle Ages, when, particularly in Florence and the north, commerce, art, and scholarship flourished. Offering details about how those born to different strata of society lived, the book also describes how members of the upper classes directed arts and letters with their patronage. Color reproductions of works by Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti are featured as well as other depictions, often unattributed, of the period. Two simple maps, one of Italy and another of Florence, are also included. This title will hold particular appeal for reluctant readers. - Carol Fazioli, formerly at The Brearley School, New York City
