A collection of articles gleaned from professional publications that alternately favor and question the efficacy of computer-assisted education and computer literacy, both in terms of how they are being used and whether, in some cases, they should be. While the articles will create many more questions than they decisively answer, these are questions that need to be asked. The 12 authoritative essays are organized in a pro/con format. While some of the selections consider the possibly exciting potential of the technology, others express deep concern for ramifications that have wide-ranging social implications. However, most are neither flat-out endorsements nor indictments as they are points of view that will help identify and consider positive and negative short- and long-term effects and our approach to this whole new world of information. Though certainly useful to upper-grade students doing research, this book really should be read by educators who so often either dive full-blown into new ideas or stubbornly resist them. And isn't that most of us?
