Reviews

Grade 7 Up-This update to the 1999 edition by Laura Egendorf presents mostly new articles. The introduction in the earlier edition focused on suicide as a predominant risk; this volume looks at the societal impact of teenage runaways and "throwaways." The book poses questions for readers to consider, recommends pieces for further study, and offers an excellent, annotated list of organizations to contact. And like the first edition, this title is divided into four main areas of concern: the factors that put teens at risk, issues of teenage sex and pregnancy, societal response to teen crime and violence, and dealing with teen substance abuse. While keeping the same high quality in the writings, the factors that this offering looks at are very different from those of the earlier book. In the first chapter of this edition, teen risk factors include peer pressure, homosexuality, and violence in society. The chapter on teen sexuality includes discussions of abstinence, teen marriage, and the problems of obtaining contraceptives. In the crime and violence chapter, articles discuss curfew laws and zero tolerance. No one volume can hope to cover such a broad and nebulous topic, but this one is timely and relevant to teens today.
