Grade 11 Up–Anyone who employs violence to achieve a political or ideological end is a terrorist. This broad definition is evidenced by Young's selection of figures for this volume. The first section, fully one third of the work, is devoted to Osama bin Laden. Chapter two addresses state terrorists, especially dictators, including Maximilien Robespierre, Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Mao Zedong, and Pol Pot. The third section involves actions aimed at national liberation and highlights those carried out by Menachem Begin, Ahmed Ben Bella, Yasir Arafat and the Fatah group, and Sean O'Callaghan. Ideologists in chapter four are Carlos the Jackal, Ted Kaczynski (the Unabomber), and Timothy McVeigh and his accomplices. Many of the entries present brief overviews of their subjects' lives before they embarked on seriously violent careers. The seeming ordinariness of these lives makes their later savagery difficult to comprehend. Most chilling of all are the terrorists' own dispassionate descriptions of bloody campaigns. Of necessity, excerpts are offered out of the context of much longer works. The editor's means of supplementing sometimes cryptic references is to add information in brackets, which, given the abundance of them, occasionally inhibits rather than aids comprehension. Ron Fridell's Terrorism (Enslow, 2001) uses simpler wording and offers a more appealing package with generous use of space and illustrations. However, it excludes most of the past dictators described in Terrorist Leaders as well as the primary-source material. It also concentrates more on terrorism as it relates to the United States. A supplement to the many biographies and autobiographies of these figures.–Ann G. Brouse, Steele Memorial Library, Elmira, NY
