Gr. 7-10. This title in the new Writing the Critical Essay series makes use of the highly respected Opposing Viewpoints format (with selections that argue crucial issues from many sides), adding exercises, suggestions, and models for students' writing. More than half the book is published articles from alternative viewpoints, and the vital contemporary questions (Are terrorist attacks inevitable? Is the threat of terrorism exaggerated? etc.) will spark debate and discussion. Will the writing section be as successful as the debate portion of the text? Probably not for most students working alone, but it will work well for classroom discussion, especially now that the SAT requires an essay. The models and analysis of several five-paragraph essays (each comprising a thesis statement, three supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion) include brief margin notes to direct research and writing. The readable book design features lots of full-color photos, and the simple, direct approach, lack of pedagogical jargon, and extensive back matter will draw students to the book and encourage them to find out more.
