From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up-Books in this series attempt to encourage critical thinking by presenting two opposing essays on different facets of controversial issues. These black-and-white opinions are deepened by the shades-of-gray sidebars and short articles inserted into the main essays. While the essays balance one another out, the editors have chosen chapter titles that present a clear bias. For example, the chapter heading "Do Some Liberal Groups Benefit Society?" confuses "liberal" with "radical," and, as there is no corresponding chapter, implies that all conservative groups benefit society. In addition, the chapter prefaces do little to introduce or bring coherence to the chapter as a whole; rather they expound on a single issue lifted from it. However, the brief introductions to each essay offer helpful summarization and questions to focus readers. The lack of illustrations will discourage all but the serious report writer, and while the small inset articles add depth, they distract from the flow of the essays in which they are placed. An additional purchase for collections where debate and persuasive writing are highlighted.-Morgan Johnson-Doyle, Sierra High School Library, Colorado Springs, CO
