From the Opposing Viewpoints series, this book presents essays, speeches, and articles that offer different opinions on issues related to stem cells. Twenty-eight entries appear under four broad topics: the promise of stem cells to cure diseases, the ethical questions raised by stem cell research, the role of government in that research, and alternatives to the use of embryonic stem cells. Preceding each viewpoint is an introductory summary and a list of three questions that readers are advised to consider as they read. Adding a textbook-like note to the presentation, the questions vary broadly in scope, and their usefulness is not always apparent. And since the questions are not differentiated from the essays themselves by typography or any other means, readers may be unsure exactly where the main text in each section begins. Some high-school students will find the reading challenging, but for others this is an accessible and thought-provoking book. A glossary and an annotated list of organizations are appended. A useful book for students researching stem cell issues for papers or debates. Phelan, Carolyn
