This collection of essays, part of the At Issue: Environment series, examines the current issue of drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). The introduction provides both background information and an overview of the issue as it stands today. The essays, written by people from a variety of backgrounds and with different experiences and beliefs, provide a balanced view of the topic. Although some of the pieces date back to 2001, this issue is still at the forefront of debates during the oil crisis of 2008, and although some statistics that are cited in the essays have already changed or will change, the basics of the issue remain the same. Having these essays collected into one volume makes this book a valuable option for young adults in speech and debate activities. Additional strengths are the list of organizations to contact and a bibliography of recent books and articles on this hot topic. Grades 10-12. --J. B. Petty
