Scotsman Samuel Campbell’s paper “mill-on-the-burn”
and the Native American-named “short hills” were the origins of the area known today as Millburn and Short
Hills. Millburn Township is recognized throughout the
country for its natural beauty, ambiance, and fine schools. After the Revolutionary War, the locale changed from a rural area of farms to one dominated by paper and felt mills. With the development of the railroad community of Wyoming in the 1870s, the town again changed course. Soon thereafter, Stewart Hartshorn, inventor of the spring window shade, chose the town for his planned “ideal community,” from which it evolved into the premier suburb it is today.

About the Author:
The photographs, postcards, and maps in this book are taken from the collection of the Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society, the Item, and individuals who have graciously allowed personal memorabilia to become part of the collection. The book is designed as a series of tours of sections of Millburn Township. You are invited to travel the route, contemplate the familiar, and rediscover that which has been lost to time. Owen Lampe was raised in Millburn and attended local schools. His fascination with the buildings and the history of the town and its residents led him to become an inveterate collector of related photographs, memorabilia, and writings.
