The history of Middleborough is a history of its numerous villages. Like other geographically large towns, Middleborough developed a number of small communities that provided their earliest residents with needed services, such as mills, schools, churches, and cemeteries. These villages ranged in size from Middleborough Four Corners, which by the 1850s had emerged as the municipal, commercial, industrial, and social center of the town, to smaller village centers like Titicut, Eddyville, Rock, and South Middleborough. Using historical images from the extensive collections of the Middleborough Historical Association, as well as from town residents, Middleborough explores the town's evolution from its earliest foundation through its mid-19th-century transition from one of southeastern Massachusetts's largest agricultural communities to one of its most industrially productive.

Title: Maddigan to speak, sign books Sunday at Robbins Museum
Author: Staff Writer
Publisher: South Coast Today
Date: 12/3/09
Local author Michael J. Maddigan will be signing copies of his new pictorial history book, "Middleborough," Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Robbins Museum of Archaeology.
The book has been published by Arcadia Publishing and is included in the "Images of America" series. The book uses more than 200 vintage photographs to "provide residents with an understanding of how our community grew and developed over the course of three centuries," Mr. Maddigan said.
A portion of the profits from the sale of the books benefits the educational activities of the historical museum.
During Sunday's program, Mr. Maddigan will also be giving a brief talk. Since he is speaking at the Robbins Museum of Archaeology, Mr. Maddigan will discuss "Archaeology of Photography," how over the past few years historians have begun to adopt the methodology of archaeology when looking at historic photographs.
The concept of the "archaeology of photography" is a "relatively new inter-disciplinary concept that is being explored by historians, as well as others including archaeologists and photographers," Mr. Maddigan said.
The museum will open at 1 p.m. for an open house, including opportunities to view a new exhibit entitled "How Do We Know What This Tool Was Used For?" featuring artifacts found on the Fields of Dreams site off Rte. 28 in Middleboro. Mr. Maddigan will speak at 2 p.m. and will be present to sign books until 3:30. Light refreshments will be available.
