About Our Editor  

Dr. Jere Link teaches Advanced Placement European History at the college-preparatory Westminster Schools in Atlanta, Ga., where he is assistant coach for the Academic Quiz Team as well as the debate team, for which he coaches Lincoln-Douglas and extemporaneous speaking.  Dr. Link attended the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in German.

 

While attending the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he studied Comparative Literature and History, Dr. Link worked as a research lab assistant in biochemistry and edited and proofread medical and scientific journals.  Following his winning a Fulbright Fellowship for study in Germany, Dr. Link completed his doctorate in 1988 and taught at Agnes Scott College and Virginia Polytechnic and State University before moving to the Westminster Schools in 1992. He received the Alumni Award for Teaching Excellence, the Merrill Family Award for Teaching, was named STAR teacher of Georgia in 1997 and earned runner-up STAR honors in 2004.  

 

He has published articles in Germany on literary politics and charities, and worked for the Southern Center for International Studies in Atlanta to produce a new text on modern Europe. His interests include classical music, good literature, theater, cooking, and his dog and cat.  

 

AP European History

Study Schedule

Here is REA’s suggested six-week study schedule to guide your prep for the AP European History Exam. Depending on how soon you will be sitting for the exam, you can expand or condense this timetable. If time is especially short, commit to covering the full historical review in one week instead of two, but we strongly recommend the two-week period. The key to gaining a firm command of the subject matter and thus the test itself is to set aside time each day for study. Once you commit to an activity, stick with it to the end. This will help ensure that you cover everything you need to be completely in control of the material—and the exam—come test day. 

 

Week 1 

Acquaint yourself with the AP European History Exam by reading Chapter 1. If you have a computer with an Internet connection, check the College Board website (http://apcentral.collegeboard.com) to be sure you’re completely in tune with all the procedural details. This way, you can walk into the test center with a clear mind and be able to focus exclusively on the task at hand. Take AP European History Practice Exam 1 as a diagnostic to gauge your strengths and weaknesses. Carefully read through all of the detailed explanations (not just those questions that you answered incorrectly). Make a note of any sections that are difficult for you, or any questions that are still unclear after reading the explanations. Review the specific field of difficulty in the AP European History course review included with this book, or by using appropriate textbooks and notes. 

 

Weeks 2 and 3         

Now it’s time to dive into our targeted course review. You’ll need to cover an average of one chapter every two days for the next two weeks. Study the review material included in this book in Chapters 2 through 9. Do not study too much at any one time and don’t let yourself fall behind. Pace yourself, so that you can better comprehend what you are reading. Remember that cramming is not an effective means of study. Before you embark on Practice Exams 2, 3 and 4 in the remaining three weeks, be sure to block out a portion of the day that will be devoted strictly to this exercise. It’s critical that you make each practice session as realistic as possible, which means that you should sit and take the test without interruption or distraction. Measure your progress from exam to exam. Take note of where your performance improves, remains static, or falls off. Allow extra time to address the latter two categories. 

 

Week 4           

Take AP European History Practice Exam 2. Read through all of the detailed explanations. Make a note of anything that you find difficult or unclear after reading the explanations. Use your AP European History course review and your textbooks, notes, or course materials to review those areas that need clarification. 

 

Week 5 

Take AP European History Practice Exam 3. Read through all of the detailed explanations. Make a note of anything that you find difficult or unclear after reading the explanations. Use your AP European History course review and your textbooks, notes, or course materials to review those areas that need clarification. 

 

Week 6 

Take AP European History Practice Exam 4. Read through all of the detailed explanations. Continue reviewing any material that you are finding difficult. Compare your progress between each of the practice exams. Note any sections where you were able to improve your score, and sections where your score remained the same or declined. Use any time remaining for extra study in areas that require added attention.
