Synopsis
Deprived of an education, Sabina is forced to work on the farm, pulling weeds and planting beans and corn in the hot sun. She's sent to a creek at the foot of the mountain, to keep the fire burning under the rum-making apparatus while her father sleeps through the raging storm. Terrified, she watches seven people get washed away by the muddy water. At age twelve, she runs away from slavery, not knowing what she'd find beyond the mountain.

About the Author
Jacqueline Jorgensen's Beyond Mud And Vines depicts the dramatic details of her escape from slavery and brutality in the hills of Puerto Rico in 1947. She was born with a thirst for knowledge, but her parents insisted that school was not necessary for girls, who would never be more than just wives and mothers. Refusing to work all her life on the farm, under rules of drunken parents who often beat her without explanation, she ran away at age twelve. She ran alongside the river, which wrapped itself around the foot of several mountains, and reached a city on the west end of the island. By perseverance and her ability to work, she made a better life for herself. Some years later, she went back to the old farm and rescued her sisters and brothers from their enslavement. Today, Jacqueline lives in California, where she studied real estate, interior decorating, and creative writing.
