The lives of Indigenous peoples have long been framed for the outside world by others' cinematic gaze. But during the past thirty years, North America's Indigenous image-makers, particularly in Canada, have used the changing technologies of film, video, television, and computer to present their peoples' histories, identities, and perspectives. This edited collection of essays, conversations, and interviews combines Indigenous and non-Indigenous voices as it sets changing representations of Indigenous people on screen against broader socio-cultural, ideological, and economic considerations.

About the Author:

Heather Norris Nicholson received her doctorate from the University of Exeter. She currently holds an honorary research post at the Centre for Canadian Studies at Birkbeck College, University of London. She is also engaged in film-related research projects at the universities of Leeds and Manchester Metropolitan.

Review:

Altogether this volume provides an extensive overview of key issues in the representation of Aboriginal people, a stimulating introduction to emerging areas of concern, and valuable insights into the production of film, video, and television about Aboriginal issues. (British Journal of Canadian Studies)

This collection of essays is a major step in wrestling with the themes of identity and image making in multicultural societies such as the United States and Canada. Joseph J. Bangura, Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, 25,2,2005,504-505

Heather Norris Nicholson's contribution to this fine book is so substantial (chapter-length introductions to each section, authorship of four of the thirteen chapters) that she might be designated primary or co-author. She considers film as both expression and empowerment, linked to identity politics and representing a shift from coloniser representation and essentialised identities to self-representation and complex or 'hybrid' identities. Valeria Alia, British Journal of Canadian Studies, 20,1, May 2007

Altogether this volume provides an extensive overview of key issues in the representation of Aboriginal people, a stimulating introduction to emerging areas of concern, and valuable insights into the production of film, video, and television about Aboriginal issues. Roy Todd, British Journal of Canadian Studies
