Jean Edward Smith is the author of twelve books, including the highly acclaimed biographies Grant (a 2002 Pulitzer Prize finalist and a New York Times Notable Book), John Marshall: Definer of a Nation (a New York Times Notable Book), and Lucius D. Clay: An American Life (a New York Times Notable Book). A graduate of Princeton University and Columbia University, Smith taught at the University of Toronto thirty-five years before joining the faculty at Marshall University, where he is the John Marshall Professor of Political Science.

This comprehensive biography of Franklin D. Roosevelt doesnt break new ground, but for listeners who arent familiar with his entire life the book provides an excellent overview. The author explores FDRs political shift from wealthy East Coast aristocrat to champion of the common man. He also shows the adjustments that were made politically and physically due to his polio. Richard McGonagle sounds a little like an old-time newsreel narrator but without any false drama in his voice. He doesnt try to imitate FDRs voice, but in reading excerpts of speeches he adopts a hint of the presidents accent, which helps identify the source of the quotes and gives the reading a good change of pace. The abridgment is seamless. The book does justice to the man, and the audio does justice to the book. R.C.G.
