Introduction

There are several ways to get your book published these days. One way is to go the traditional route, submitting query letters to agents then waiting for their response. You could also self-publish, but that was often too costly and complicated a venture. It wasn't until about three years ago that another option began to present itself. That option is called on-line or on-demand publishing. Now, to alleviate some confusion let me say that we're not talking about e-books here (although that's also an option) we're talking about the real thing. The book you always dreamt of holding in your hand.

Before you turn up your nose to the idea of on-line publishing, consider this--- The typical, big New York publisher prints about 800 titles a year. At last count, some of the on-line publishers were doing 500 a month. Early estimates indicate that on-line publishers printed around a half a million books in 2001. This year, there are indications that the on-line/epublishing industry will be about a $78 billion dollar market. These indicators tell us that the on-line publishers are growing at a pace no one ever anticipated. Why? Because they are filling a void in the industry. You want to get your book published? You want to begin to create a name for yourself? This is how you can do it.

Imagine this-- You publish your first novel through one of these new on-line publishing companies, but you not only publish it, you can sell it too. And, you not only sell it, you sell it well. So well in fact, that you will either garner the attention from one of the traditional literary giants, or, when your second book is ready for submission to a publisher, you can include in your packet all the progress you made with your first book. Publishing companies like to see authors that are actively involved with their books. Because the truth is, they don t spend a whole lot of time with newbies. One fallacy among writers is that when you sign with a traditional publishing house, you no longer have to handle all of the promotion of the book yourself. Not true. The fact is that while it s nice to have the power that a well-known name brings, you can t expect to sit on your laurels and wait for the royalty checks to come in. In fact, publishing houses will usually promote you up to ninety days from the time of publication. If the book hasn t taken off by then, you re on your own. Some companies don t promote first time authors that much unless the subject matter is such that it becomes a media bandwagon. In fact, did you know that when published traditionally, your book has the shelf life of milk? Forty-two days to be exact. If it s not flying off the bookstore shelves in forty-two days, it s headed to the remainder table, or, even worse, the shredder. Ever heard of a little book called: Don t Sweat the Small Stuff? Well, it was only discovered when it was sitting outside a bookstore by the dumpster. The story goes that someone in the publishing industry was walking past the dumpster, saw the books and the rest is history.

Despite some initial challenges, I am glad to have gone this route with The Cliffhanger. It has done exceedingly well, despite the negative biases surrounding this type of publishing and despite print-on-demand (which we will elaborate on later in this book). I have learned more than I ever thought I would. In fact, having spent some time dabbling in the industry with freelance work, writing an article here and there. I thought I knew everything. Boy, was I in for a surprise. This book is meant in no way to be the last book on publishing and marketing you will ever buy. In fact, I encourage you to stay constantly immersed in a variety of books on marketing as there are many great ones. It s important for you as a new author to be in a constant state of learning. You ve spent years developing your talent as a writer. Now, it s time to develop another talent: your ability to market.

This book will introduce you the various publishers and the idea of print-on-demand and marketing these types of publications. I ve gathered everything that I ve learned, and now, I m imparting it to you. Keep in mind that, like you, I am continuing to learn new things every day. While this information is as of this writing, current, things change, sometimes on a daily basis. My commitment to you is to keep this book as up-to-date as I can with frequent updates and additions. And if you see something in here that isn t quite right, or perhaps a Web site that s out of date. E-mail me at penny@booksbypen.com.
