Fred McClain, a Scottish immigrant, returns to Canada in 1919 after serving in the Great War. Recruiting the aid of his nephew, the two set upon their journey to Fred's cattle ranch, located in the Canadian West. When Fred's life abruptly comes to an end, Billy is faced with running a ranch on his own and tracking down the men who killed his uncle. The search leads Billy into the flourishing oil fields of the day. His rapid success is soon brought into question as his ranch and oil holdings are threatened with bankruptcy.
