From the Author:
I grew up under Hitler--a child of 13 at war's end. Many Germans still suffer from the collective guilt for Hitler's crimes. Yet few people in the outside world know what life was like then. How much we all suffered. Every day. Always hungry. Always afraid of teachers, informers and SS. Not allowed to think or ask questions. Not save in your own home because police or SS could enter anytime and take anything--no warrant needed. That is why I wrote this book. Not specifically about the holocaust which has been thoroughly documented, but about our life as German civilians, Jews and Non-Jews alike. All stories are based on true events.
From the Inside Flap:
The wisdom of our rulers or the lack of it has varied widely in the course of history. Heads of state shape the lives of their people, often for generations to come. And yet, people have chosen and applauded rulers devoid of wisdom, who have brought them to the brink of disaster. Of all the unwise rulers, few have exerted a stronger hold on their people than Hitler and Stalin. These dictators ruled with an iron hand, controlling every aspect of their subjects' lives, exerting power even over their thinking. Though written as fiction, the events of this book are true. They are the stories of three college friends (one of whom was my father) and their families. It shows life in Germany as it was during the tumultuous first half of the last century. I was born when Hitler came to power. Nine years of his reign are deeply engraved in my memory--years that raised many questions. Is life perpetual struggle? Does good prevail over evil? Can we choose future leaders more wisely? History does give us answers.
