Synopsis

Tsar Nicholas II holds the fate of Russia in his hands after receiving a fateful prophecy warning of an horrific future that lies ahead. What will the richest and most powerful man in the world do to save all he holds dear? The Tsar's Masquerade is the answer. The authors weave such a compelling tale that the line blurs between fact and fiction.

This work is not just about Nicholas and Alexandra, the last Tsar and Tsarina of Russia. The novel lifts the Grand Duchesses out of the shadowy pages of history books, gives them personalities, and chronicles their development from children into mature young women.  The reader is provided a different look at the character of the Tsar and the mercurial behavior of his beloved wife. It is in essence a love story, plain and simple, but not the kind one would expect to find in a typical romance novel. It focuses on the overwhelming love Nicholas had for his family and his country and the measures he was willing to take to protect these two great loves.

The Masquerade is the Tsar's plan to save his family and ultimately Russia. The reader will make his own judgements as to whether the Tsar was successful and the authors succeeded in crafting a believeable tale.

About the Author

It seemed appropriate to acknowledge the writers under the pen name, Raphael Mercikovsky. They without exception, exhibited a fascination with this period of history and made every effort to make the events in this work of fiction reflect historical reality, or at least the possibility of it. The coauthors conducted extensive telephone and internet interviews with knowledgeable individuals all over the world. As each new piece of information was developed it was analyzed for inclusion in the narrative. The project was exciting and rewarding and "The Tsar's Masquerade" is the result.

From the Back Cover

In March 1917 the first of two revolutions, which occurred in Russia that year, led to the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II and the end of the three hundred year old rule of the Romanov dynasty. A vast body of literature tends to portray Nicholas as a weak and vacillating individual who was easily influenced by his wife, and her spiritual advisor, the notorious Grigory Rasputin. The Tsar's indecisiveness and lack of concern, it is suggested, contributed directly to the overthrow of the monarchy and created the political climate that enabled the Bolsheviks to seize power. One might have assumed that, under the secretive Soviet government, any documents relating to the chaotic events following the takeover would be destroyed. Surprisingly, just the opposite is the case and numerous records, hidden away for decades, have begun to appear. The diaries, letters, notes, police reports, and a variety of other papers that relate to the period have encouraged a new round of examination, analysis and speculation. Conspiracy theories abound and there does not seem to be a consensus as to what really happened in the early days of the Soviet era. This story provides the answer to the dilemma.

From the Inside Flap

This work is not just about Nicholas and Alexandra, the last Tsar and Tsarina of Russia. The novel also lifts the Grand Duchesses out of the shadowy pages of history books, gives them personalities, and chronicles their development from children into mature young women. The readers will be introduced to everyone in the Masquerade and can then make their own judgments as to whether the Tsar was successful in his plan to save Russia. The author has provided the reader a different look at the character of the Tsar and the mercurial behavior of his beloved wife. It is in essence a love story, plain and simple, but not the kind one would expect to find in a typical romance novel. It focuses rather on the overwhelming love Nicholas had for his family and his country and the measures he was willing to take to protect these two great loves. To delve into the character of the man it is necessary to understand the way in which mystical experiences affected his decisions and to accept the fact that the Tsar was a man of faith. Once he made up his mind Nicholas became a driven man and no obstacle seemed too great to be overcome.
