This book outlines a new strategy that applies the organizing principles of progressive internationalism―national strength, free enterprise, liberal democracy, U.S. leadership for collective security―to the new challenge of defeating Islamist extremism. That plan, as set forth in detail in this book, revolves around five progressive imperatives for national security: * First, we must marshal all of America's manifold strengths, starting with our military power but going well beyond it, for the struggle ahead. * Second, we must rebuild America's alliances, because democratic solidarity is one of our greatest strategic assets. * Third, we must champion liberal democracy in deed, not just in rhetoric, because a freer world is a safer world. * Fourth, we must renew U.S. leadership in the international economy and rise to the challenge of global competition. * Fifth, we must summon from the American people a new spirit of national unity and service. In sum, the progressive strategy detailed in this book takes advantage of all of our country's strengths, not just the big stick of military power. It seeks to unite, not polarize and divide, our people. It links the defense of liberty abroad with a new determination to press progressive reforms at home. It calls on all Americans-not just our men and women in uniform-to share the burden of prevailing in what is likely to be a long, arduous and costly struggle. Will Marshall is President and Founder of the Progressive Policy Institute, and editor-at-large of Blueprint magazine. He is also editor of Building the Bridge: 10 Big Ideas to Transform America (1997) and co-editor of Mandate for Change (1992).
This book takes the long view, beyond the difficulties in Iraq to America's long-range strategy for defeating Islamist extremism. It presents a bold plan for repairing our overstretched military, rebuilding our strategic alliances, renewing our economic strength, and restoring America's most precious asset―our moral authority. (Mark Warner, former Governor of Virginia)
With All Our Might reconnects Democrats to our party's proud heritage of defending our country in tough and smart ways. It is a how-to manual for winning our new war against terror, yet its vision and strategies would not be unfamiliar to Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, or John Kennedy. (Senator Evan Bayh)
Anyone who questions whether Democrats are capable of taking charge of America's fight against jihadist terror should read this book. It offers a compelling alternative to the one-dimensional Bush doctrine, a progressive vision for recapturing the totality of America's strength―our ideas and ideals, as well as our military might―to defend our way of life. (Senator Joseph Biden)
It has become increasingly obvious that America's 'war on terror' is actually part of something much bigger: an historic confrontation between democracy and totalitarianism. With All Our Might makes a compelling case that Democrats can do a better job of winning this war of ideas, vindicating our progressive values and making Americans safer. (Tom Vilsack, Governor of Iowa and Chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council)
Insightful, provocative. . . . (The New York Times)
... an impressive lineup of younger defense and security intellectuals .... Melissa Tryon's remarkably sensitive examination of current military culture, [is] an essay that should be required reading for all post-Vietnam politicians. (Tom Donnelly, Resident Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and editor of Armed Forces Journal)
... a fascinating book that lays out what the foreign policy of a winning campaign could look like. (Jackson Diehl, The Washington Post)
With All Our Might is a stimulataing and, at times, inspiring call to arms. (Michael Allen Democratiya)
Marshall's book presents essays by a variety of writers on the war of ideas, global terrorism, military culture, the health of the transatlantic alliance, the reform of the United Nations, the economic foundations of foreign policy, and the new configuration of ideas and sentiments among the rising generation in the Democratic Party. The chapters are united by the conviction that American foreign policy is in a state of crisis and that progressivism provides a stand-alone and self-sufficient perspective that generates a set overarching foreign policy imperatives and a cluster of specific policies. ...Marshall's book contains many proposals, tending to revolve around the progressive search for more effective measures for the political and economic reform of the Muslim Arab Middle East, that deserve careful consideration. (Policy Review)
