Paperback Raita, William Rhode's cracking debut novel, really does have it all: "drugs, diamonds, exotic locations, sexy girl, the plan that goes horribly wrong". It also, unfortunately, has an implausible, contrived, if nonetheless still enjoyable, opening premise. Its central character and narrator Joshua King must write a bestselling novel featuring his late father to claim his five million-pound inheritance. Joshua has never previously shown any aptitude for fiction; he's your typical English traveller in India. He's bummed about, taken drugs and once or twice scribbled an article for the Hindu Week newspaper. Of course, all that is about to change. A police drugs raid on his Delhi doss-house brings Josh into contact with the oh-so-gorgeous Yasmin. Her boyfriend James has been dragged off and slung in prison. Could the raid be the work of the mysterious Baba, a Bollywood film mogul turned drug trafficker and diamond smuggler, whom Josh believes could supply him with both a scoop for the paper and the material for his bestseller? Yasmin, Josh and his old friend Sanjay, quickly form a cunning plan to rip off Baba, free James and, with any luck, finish up with a healthy stack of cash. Easy, obviously. Murders, home cooked pakoras, heroin deals, stolen motorbikes, double-crossing dames and all manner of subcontinental plots and counter plots ensue until the whole thing judders to a fittingly post-modern conclusion. \n\n\nTHE TIMES\n'A rollicking Anglo-Indian thriller with a twist ... Rhode has a wickedly ironic sense of humour: think Kipling's PLAIN TALES told by a 21st Century PG Wodehouse'

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A novel that captures the voice of a generation - from an outstanding new talent. When Joshua King's father dies of a Viagra overdose, he leaves his son a fortune - on condition that Josh writes a bestselling novel. But the last thing Josh wants is a purpose in life; he's far too busy travelling, taking drugs and growing his hair. Now, uncomfortably ensconced in dirty, downtown Delhi, still desperately searching for inspiration, Josh reckons he's on to the Big One. Which is to find, befriend and finally unmask the subcontinent's legendary drug baron, Baba. Add the beautiful and elusive Yasmin to the plot, and Josh finds himself enmeshed in a quest so unbelievable it must surely give him scope for a novel. But three months later, abandoned, penniless and starving in Mumbai's Caged City, selling heroin to street kids and wanted for questioning after the murder of a Bollywood superstar, Josh is discovering the dangers of fiction. It is all far too real. Fantastical, funny, provocative and wise: Paperback Raita is the story of what happens when the dreaming stops, the drugs wear off and the writing has to begin. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Seller Inventory # GOR004360416
