About the Author

Michael Culp, CFA, began investing at age 12 and later turned his love of the stock market into a 27-year Wall Street career. Following eight years researching health care companies, retailers, banks and fast food chains, Mr. Culp was hired as a Senior Restaurant Industry Analyst by Prudential Securities in 1982 and was voted #1 in his field in Institutional Investor's All-America Research Poll, the same poll that figures so prominently in Conflicted, in 1983 through 1986.

In March 1986, at the age of 33, Mr. Culp was named Director of Research of Prudential Securities, and 11 years later he was recruited by PaineWebber to serve in the same capacity at that firm.

Mr. Culp, who retired from Wall Street in November 2000 following PaineWebber's acquisition by UBS AG, resides in Southampton, New York with his wife, Deborah Bronston, who was also a #1-ranked analyst and later Associate Director of Research at a leading securities firm before retiring in early 2003.
