PreSchool-KA series of four small books that features what may be the finest artwork of the accomplished Bayley. Unfortunately, the stories, especially that of Boy, seem slight when compared with Bayley's outstanding illustrations. Curiously, the merry-go-round motif found in the jacket art, endpapers, and series title plays no part in the actual stories. Boy makes his way through a typical day, and Cook, a squirrel, bakes a cake for tea. Clown manages to take a bow in spite of some mishaps, and Fish erman, an otter, maintains his ship and brings home his catch. Each charac ter's tale is somewhat sketchily told in short rhymed couplets. The expressive, poetic language outlines the action of each vignette, but readers must rely on the illustrations to fill in the details. Pages of text are framed with orna mented borders, and the full-color illus trations show an attention to detail that readers expect from the likes of Beatrix Potter and Jill Barklem. The fine paint ings portray every hair in the squirrel's furry tail and each grain of wood in the otter's boat. Bayley varies her palette from book to book by selecting soft, muted hues for the cook and the fisher man and bright, primary colors for the boy and the clown.
