From Publishers Weekly

It is a pleasure to welcome back the congenially confused pig introduced in Pog. With a knack for making the illogical seem logical, the Pooh-like Pog gets himself into--and out of--some highly unconventional dilemmas. Here, the thirsty Pog scales a pile of books stacked on a chair, in hopes of reaching his teapot on a high hutch. His vain ascent proves so enjoyable, he decides to tackle Mount Everest. Setting out with characteristic vagueness (uncertain as to the mountain's whereabouts, he questions a few inanimate objects), Pog finally gets on the right track. Ladder in hand, he walks for four years before reaching his destination. After several false starts, the determined animal succeeds--according to his calculations, "Not only have I climbed Mount Everest, I've climbed it TWO AND A QUARTER TIMES!" But still he yearns for a spot of tea, so down Pog comes and home he runs. His ladder now gives him easy access to the teapot, and at long last the harried creature fixes himself some tea. Haswell's comically convoluted story and amusingly illustrated pages are filled with just the brand of silliness that kids love. Ages 3-6.

From School Library Journal

After Pog makes an unsuccessful climb to retrieve his teapot from the top of his china cabinet, he decides to scale Mount Everest instead. The intrepid pig sets off for the peak only to realize that he has no idea how to get there. During his trek, he acquires a ladder, which doesn't help much in his conquest of the mountain but does help him secure a cup of tea when he returns home. The book's humor will appeal to children old enough to appreciate such absurdities as asking directions from a street light or deciding to walk backwards to see where you've been to avoid getting lost. Haswell's lighthearted watercolor cartoons reinforce the silliness of Pog's adventures, although many pages contain several pictures that carry along the action but limit the audience to small groups or individual readers. Children will identify with Pog's attempts to deal with a confusing world. --Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN
