PreSchool-Grade 1-- Bill is an elephant with a problem--no belly button. With the help of the kids who play with him at the park, he searches diligently for it but to no avail. To cheer him up, the children use poster paints to paint not one, but many spiral belly buttons all over Bill's belly. But they don't last. A timely letter from the zookeeper, telling them that elephants' belly buttons are almost impossible to find, solves the puzzle and leaves Bill and friends contented. Jeram's lightly hued watercolor-and-pencil illustrations depict a pachyderm with personality. With just a few deft strokes, she conveys a range of elephantine emotions from perplexity to glee. The illustrations and text complement each other, but because the large-sized type has a tendency to overwhelm the pastel-shaded pictures, this work is easier to share one-on-one than with a group. A somewhat weak ending (anything that's lost is only as lost as Bill's belly button) doesn't detract from the charm of the tale about a part of the body that fascinates kids. A gentle lesson on self-image, from an elephant whom children will hope to meet again. --Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha Public Library, WI
