PreSchool-Grade 2 Tom, a boy of indeterminate age, hears a series of noises while looking for his cat. Each noise is followed by a picture of the cat in actionserving tea, tap dancing on the table, scrubbing himself in the bathand a question asking if the noise is caused by the cat. The actual, much more mundane, causes of the noises are confusing, as the sounds are not good matches. After five such exchanges, the book ends with Tom's cat having silently torn up the cushion of an easy chair. Tom's charming cat dominates the pen and watercolor illustrations. Clever touches, such as a misdirected pancake hanging from a lamp and a mouse running off in a corner, add to the general amusement, while a large typeface adds to the attractive graphic design.
