Synopsis
Two stylish die-cut board books that introduce the concept of colours. These two colours concept books are part of Walker's new range of concept board books that combine graphic pictures with ingeniously simple novelty devices. In this case die-cut pages reveal that strawberries are red, oranges are orange, bananas are yellow and so on. Each page has more cut off it than the one before, so that the layered images finally form a delicious-looking fruit salad (Strawberries are Red). What Is Black and White? works in a similar way, with the pages revealing that the night is black, the snow is white, the cat is black, the milk is white, and so on. But this time, the black and white pages are turned to reveal...a zebra!

If the night, a cat, and a crow are black, and snow, milk, and a goose are white, what is black and white? Turn the diminishing pages of this clever little board book to find out. As each alternating black-and-white page narrows in width, black and white stripes start appearing on the left side, until... surprise! The final page reveals the answer we've all been waiting for. The left side of each two-page spread has black text on white or white on black, depending on whether "the milk is white" or "the cat is black." Opposite, against changing jewel-toned backgrounds, is each lovely black or white item. Petr Horacek's lovely watercolor-and-crayon illustrations give this small book a rough-edged, friendly look. About the Author
Petr Horacek is a young Czech illustrator and painter making his publishing debut. He works in a mixture of mediums including crayon, watercolour and ink and loves to explore the bookmaking process. His style, which is bold and naive with a very European feel, is full of startling colour. Petr trained at the Academy of Fine Art in Prague and then worked for some time as a graphic designer in the Czech State Advertising Agency before settling permanently in the UK in 1995. He lives in Worcester with his wife, Claire, and their two daughters Teraza and Cecilia.
