Synopsis
An anthology, taken from "The Independent Magazine of Politics and Culture", which forms a historical commentary, documenting a legacy of independent, critical and animated writing on politics, social and cultural events throughout the period. Writers and artists covered in the book include Henry James, Ezra Pound, Albert Einstein, Thomas Mann, Henry Miller, Hannah Arendt, Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath and Martin Luther King Jnr. The political essays address issues of civil rights, foreign policy and social change. Modern revolutions in art, literature and culture are covered by international writers and critics and the anthology is completed by a collection of poetry.

Albert Einstein applauds the 1932 Disarmament Conference as a "ray of hope"; Emma Goldman, just back from the Soviet Union, laments the tens of thousands of political exiles created by Stalin, Hitler and Mussolini; I. F. Stone exhorts the U.S. government to give sanctuary to European Jews who face death under Hitler.
