About the Author
Lois Rock has established an international reputation as a children's writer. Specialising in Bible stories, prayer books, and information books, her books have been translated into over 30 languages with sales approaching 4 million copies. She draws on her experience as a mother of three, and as a leader of church children's groups. Alison Jay's haunting illustrations evoke a mood that hovers between the reality of this world and the mystery of heaven. Her major books include The Lion Treasury of Children's Prayers and Brian Patten's Emma's Doll (Penguin). She is winner of the 1999 Association of Illustration/Transworld Award.

PreS-Gr. 2. This pretty little book offers 24 graces to say before meals along with two short, after-meal prayers of thanks. Attributions include "an African grace," "a Chinese grace," "a Mennonite children's prayer," "From Luke 1:1:2-3," and a few named sources, such as Thomas Tallis and Isaac Watts. Presumably the few without attribution are those written by Rock herself. The quality varies from fine to prosaic. Although some of the blessings display explicitly Christian references, most are more general in their frames of reference. Consistently accomplished, Jay's stylized paintings brighten and warm the pages, visually underscoring the through-the-day theme of the graces' arrangement in the book and bringing the many verses into a coherent whole.
