Based on interviews with McEnroe, this book describes his middle-class New York Irish upbringing, his rise to stardom and the slump in his career. It goes on to examine his renowned on-court behaviour, his stormy relationship with the press, and marriage and fatherhood.

An updated edition of tennis journalist Evans's McEnroe: A Rage for Perfection (LJ 10/15/82). LJ' s reviewer called that book a " 'midterm report' on l'enfant terrible" of tennis, and described McEnroe as a "player driven to seek perfection in his game as well as in those who call his matches." Evans, who comes across as a McEnroe apologist, still sees McEnroe as a perfectionist who is unable to control his temper. In this new edition, he has reworked the earlier material and added several chapters that bring the story to the end of 1989, including, according to the publishers, wife Tatum O'Neal's "first published interview on life with John." For libraries with tennis aficionados, and where there is still interest in McEnroe.
