About the Author

Michael Rosen is a hugely best-selling author of picture books and poetry. His classic picture book, WE'RE GOING ON A BEARHUNT, illustrated by Helen Oxenbury, has become a permanent favourite. Michael frequently appears on radio and gives talks and lectures on children's literature. He is the winner of the Eleanor Farjeon Award for services to children's literature. Michael lives in London. Neal Layton is the talented illustrator of a number of books for Bloomsbury: ZARTOG'S REMOTE (Herbie Brennan and NL 2000), NOTHING SCARES US (Frieda Wishinsky and NL, 2000), ROVER (Michael Rosen and NL, 1999) and THE PHOTO (1998), of which he is also the author. He was selected by Quentin Blake as one of a 'baker's dozen' of talented children's illustrators working today, and won the Smarties Award with his book OSCAR AND ARABELLA.

PreSchool-Grade 2–The canine narrator of Rover(Doubleday, 1999) is back in another hilarious adventure. His human family is exhibiting some strange and puzzling behavior. First, Cindy starts getting bigger, not upward, but outward. Then Rex brings home a new "basket" that the narrator naturally assumes is his, and he can't understand why the humans always bark at him when he tries to climb into it. Then they drive off in a hurry, leaving Rover at the neighbor's house. When they return, they have a new baby with them, who howls all the time and demands their complete attention. What's a dog to do to get noticed? Barking, tail wagging, and fetching a ball don't work, and it is not until the narrator makes a plan and fathers his own litter with Ruff-ruff, who lives next door, that his family shows any interest. The universal tale of sibling rivalry is given a fresh, comical twist from the perspective of a good-natured, but baffled pet. The brightly colored illustrations, done messily and with a lot of energy, are reminiscent of children's drawings and offer many amusing details. The pup's dry sense of humor is the perfect counterpoint for the goofy, exuberant art.
